Alain Rouschmeyer: map human stories through space

March 2025

publication

With architecture training, Rouschmeyer approaches his compositions with a deep consciousness of the structure and framing. Its recurring theme, a path made (or crossroads ), reflects its continuous interest in human posture and movement in daily environments. He often draws in real time, observing how people live in space, how the paths cross and how simple gestures have an emotional weight. There is a quiet poetry in his work - a tenderness in the way the posture and the place are made not only visually, but emotionally.

ALAIN ROUSCHMEYER PAINTING RESURES

published at the end of November 2022

“ALAIN ROUSCHMEYER PAINTING RESURES SURFACE”

Even if “painting has always existed” in his life, Alain Rouschmeyer has recently been showing his paintings. Son of an artist-architect father and a musician mother, the architect, interior designer and designer, based on the west shore of Lake Annecy, kept this passion to himself for a long time. However, pencils and brushes were his preference long before he joined the Beaux-Arcs in Metz. “I took a little break when I was a teenager, out of disappointment. I took part in a lot of competitions, which I failed: people said that it was not me who had done the drawing but my father!”

After Metz, the Arts Deco of Strasbourg. “There were 300 or 400 candidates for the entrance exam which lasted a week, with 30 accepted! It was "folklo", we were in the 70s. A good 50% of candidates had failed dental school or law school. They said: “Arts Deco is easy, I’ll put a scarf around my neck and I’ll go!” But it was a rather academic school with teachers who had a rather academic vision. The complete opposite of what we experience today!”

A WORKSHOP WITH A VIEW ON THE LAKE

Despite his passion for painting, Alain Rouschmeyer chose interior architecture. A knowledge that he completed several years later at the National School of Architecture of Lyon. But recently, weariness has taken over: “For me, architecture must bring something new to the field of construction. I'm a little disappointed. I feel restricted [by the standards, the conservatism of decision-makers, Editor’s note]. »

What if it was time for the architect to leave a little more room for the painter? Especially since they both have one major thing in common: a pronounced taste for drawing! “Sketching has always been a common thread in my profession. I believe that a good project is first drawn with the hand and not a tablet.” Until now "personal satisfaction" and "posture of well-being", painting has established itself as a second activity, and the Bredannaz workshop, with a view of the lake, has been organized.

“I ALWAYS HAVE A SKETCHBOOK WITH ME”

Artist, architect and urban sketcher, Alain Rouschmeyer ended up “accepting the cohabitation of [his] different skills”. His playground? Figurative and acrylic. “I paint a little in oils, but I easily come back to acrylics. It fits my rhythm better.” Portraits, still lifes, scenes from everyday life... The themes he evokes are multiple. Just like his sources of inspiration: “It’s very weird. Sometimes I look out the window and a couple walking around catches my attention, or it's the posture or way of dressing of a woman on the Place de Duingt where I very often walk. I'm a homebody, I don't travel and I'm a bit like Churchill: 'No sport!'” In addition to the exhibitions (from the latest one he walked away with two prizes!), he also reveals his works on the internet: “I don't believe in galleries anymore. I think it has become more of a Sunday stroll than a cultural journey.” This choice seems judicious, except for one detail: “I have paintings in the United States, Austria, Greece, the Canary Islands, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Norway... But in France, not a!"

Since 2022, the former student of François Cacheux has been one of the ten Haute-Savoie artists listed via the i-CAC. “I didn't feel the interest but the listing opens doors, even if it can discourage buyers. And then, before, I made my prices myself and I realized that my rating was higher. Chic!"

Ultimately, Alain Rouschmeyer was right to give time time. “It’s quite funny, when I was a student or a young architect, I told myself that if one day I became an artist, I would rather be a sculptor. I saw myself with a welding machine and metal things. Or I saw myself drawing houses, I liked drawing straight things. Today, I paint and I draw a lot of characters... I was completely wrong!” ■

LOFT & DECORATION

ALAIN ROUSCHMEYER PAINTER ARTIST

published at the end of October 2022

“ALAIN ROUSCHMEYER painter

Creation has always attracted Alain Rouschmeyer... He grew up alongside an architect father and a musician mother, two lovers of the arts who passed this fiber on to him. He has been drawing and painting since his earliest childhood, finding in this pictorial expression a world made of freedom and emotion. So, he immersed himself in it a little more every day, taking part in competitions and entering the Beaux-Arts in Metz, then the Decorative Arts in Strasbourg. He follows in his father's footsteps learning architecture and interior design.

His mind has always composed and decomposed, combining perspectives and shapes to rethink spaces and this ability is felt on his canvases. Alain will rub shoulders with many artists and from now on, he leaves more room for his attraction to painting. He offers us his vision of the world and explains it with a personal technique. Everything starts from a sketch, a vision of a place full of life or feelings. The artist explains his inspiration by saying: “I am attracted by a place and the way it is occupied! The posture that people can take towards him inspires me. When I think archi, I design a house based on the way of living and this link has always particularly interested me. The pleasure of scripting someone's posture in a place. The link between man and his environment is where my ideas often come from. »

So, he never walks without his notebook and pencils, he wanders, lets his eyes wander and keeps his heart open to welcome a new inspiring vision. He sketches and rushes to paint using an acrylic paint whose spontaneity matches that of the premises of his creation. Places leave traces on people and each individual marks places, it is a circle charged with sensation and feelings. Vibrations that Alain Rouschmeyer can perceive. It's a philosophy of life, a way to savor the present moment, capturing it forever on canvas.

The artist reveals his sensitivity and his connection with the environment that surrounds him. A very curious person, he seeks to share his stories, his memories and his visions in positive figurative art. The paintings are colorful and attractive, they surf on a relatively modern style allowing us to dust off the idea we have of a figurative work. Alain Rouschmeyer gives an enchanting look at the world, he is interested in the poetry of everyday life, in the small moment of peace and joy. To then transcribe it for us...”

“ALAIN ROUSCHMEYER

Alain Rouschmeyer is best known for his acrylic paintings on canvas and his contemporary ink drawings. An observer of everyday life, he analyzes the human walk through the postures and spaces crossed, as if to probe the bench and capture its scent.

His artistic itinerary invites him to work on architecture, in which he likes to reflect on living spaces and the transversalities that define their uses.

It explores the hidden dimension of everyday life which never ceases to challenge us like jazz music or warm blues. The romanticism of which he fully assumes the contemporary and timeless translation inhabits the support as an involved space.”

HUMAN BODY IS ART

ALAIN ROUSCHMEYER

publication June 2021

“Alain Rouschmeyer studied at the Beaux-Arts in Metz, then at the Decorative Arts in Strasbourg.
Interior designer, then architect, drawing and sketching have become his mode of expression over the years. The figurative remains the heart of his work as a painter, keeping the essence of the sketch, to better translate this feeling of the ephemeral and the emotions. He likes to work on the poetry of the moment, the visual of a moment stolen from a medium which becomes complicit in the framing.”
